Information about this partner:

Póvoa de Varzim is a seaside town in the north of Portugal. In Summer, it welcomes thousands of tourists attracted by its awesome beaches and typical food, especially Spanish people, since we are only 45 minutes away from the border with Spain. It is very close to large cities such as Porto, Guimarães or Braga and 25 km from an international airport. Both on the inside and seaside pilgrims walk, all year round, along the paths of St. James, bringing faith, visibility and popularity to Póvoa de Varzim.

Traditionally, population worked in agriculture and fishing but also in small textile factories; adults qualifications were quite low. However, nowadays, younger generations tend to have big modern greenhouses to cultivate all year round and study to get “better” jobs. Tourism and commerce are major areas of employability.

Aver-O-Mar School is a lower secondary public school, head of a cluster of schools called Agrupamento de Escolas Aver-O-Mar which includes four kindergarten classes and seven Primary Schools. Our school community includes around 152 teachers and 1190 students, aged 6 to 15, from 1st to 9th grade. At present there are students of different origins due to migratory flows, specially Spaniards and Brazilians, 44 non-teaching staff; a Psychologist, a Social Service Technician, 2 Librarian Teachers . Major subjects are Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Physical Education, Music, Arts, ICT and Religion. The people involved in this project come from different areas/subjects – languages, maths, arts - and the school librarian. Different areas mean different teaching methods and activities adapted to different types of audience/teenagers. The school librarian being a key element building a link between the curricular and extracurricular activities. This is a school project, therefore the whole community, specially parents, will be involved. School’s student support office and vocational support office will be part of this project’s team in order to reinforce the importance of vocational knowledge in student’s careers. In the last 2 years school has been involved in international projects on eTwinning and Erasmus; was recently awarded the eTwinning School Label 2020/21; has upgraded its School Educative Project to include and focus more on European Citizenship and Inclusion. Thus, enhancing technology, linguistic, communicative skills and PBL strategies to foster innovation into teaching and learning methodologies. Therefore, this project will facilitate the school’s goals. Many students are of lower social status, have few opportunities to make choices for life besides those given in school, and are willing to learn, communicate.

The coordinator of the project will be Marta Antunes, English teacher and specialized librarian teacher. In case she might have to leave her post a member of the team will replace her.
